About the event
More about Edwina:
Edwina Ratcliff Lordly was born in Chester on 27 March, 1890 to Captain Edwin Douglas Lordly and Evaline Harriet Lordly. She was a woman ahead of her time. She was a professional nurse and enrolled as a sister nurse in the Canadian Army Medical Corps No. 2 during World War I seeing action in the French theater of war. She met and fell in love, and in 1918 married Royal Air Force Officer John Adrian Chamier, who was later knighted. There were rumors that Edwina and her husband were involved in spying for their country.
Edwina was a lifelong sportswoman, great athlete and Canadian Alpine Skiing Olympic champion. She was 45 years old when she skied the slalom competition at the 1936 Winter Olympics and until 2002 was the oldest athlete ever to compete in the Winter Olympics. Edwina successfully looked for opportunity, adventure and challenge throughout her 91 years. A leader in so many ways.
On Saturday, July 26th, Victorian inspired picnic baskets for either one or two people will be available for pick-up between 1:00pm and 4:00pm at the Chester Legion. Delicious specialties and taste treats will fill the Take-Home Basket by Chef Tom Connors and a team of volunteers from the Chester Municipal Heritage Society. Begin ordering June 1, 2025. After that, you are in charge of your own event – picnic on your porch, during a romantic sail or even on a deserted island.
